Flt Lt K Jenkins                                                                   Sgt ATC N Gooding

Currently the staff at 1146 (Barnstaple) Squadron ATC consist of a Commissioned Officer, one adult Non-Commissioned Officer, and one Civilian Instructor. Like all staff on Air Training Corps Squadrons, we are all volunteers, assisting with Squadron duties in addition to our civilian employment. The staff of 1146 Sqn have a variety of different jobs but we all have in common an interest in the Air Training Corps, Aviation, and the welfare and development of young people.

If you are interested, there are opportunities to join the Air Training Corps as adult staff .We and our neighbouring units are usually looking for staff who are able to attend on a regular basis and who may be prepared to take on particular responsibilities within the Squadron.  If your son or daughter is a cadet, or if you are just interested in what we do, we would welcome an application to join.  Initially this may be as a Civilian Instructor but if you are able to commit sufficient time you may wish to take on more responsibility through a uniformed role as a Non Commissioned Officer, or through a commission as an officer in the RAF Volunteer Reserve (Training). There are also opportunities to assist the running of the Squadron through becoming a member of our Squadron Civilian Committee, which has responsibilities for finance and squadron welfare.

The application process for adult staff will involve completion of CRB checks to ensure that you are suitable to work with children and young people. After your position is confirmed, you will be required to attend an induction course within your first twelve months. Other training will then be offered in a variety of areas depending on your role, availability, and your wishes for the future. We do not require that you have previous experience in the UK armed forces, although relevant experiences or skills are an advantage. Most important is an ability to commit time to Squadron on a regular basis.

Civilian Instructors are not required to wear a uniform but uniformed staff are expected to wear the uniform of the RAF. All staff are required to comply with the applicable RAF / MOD dress regulations. As Squadron staff are all volunteers they are generally unpaid for air cadet duties, although pay equivalent to that of RAF personnel can be claimed by uniformed staff when assisting with formal duties away from the Squadron. Please contact us if you wish to know more, or if you would like to apply to join us. If you do not live in Barnstaple, or if we have no vacancies when you call, we would be happy to put you in touch with other nearby Squadrons.
